What's on This Practice Exam

The Texas Residential Wireman Electrician exam is 80 questions. You have 240 minutes to finish. You need a 70% to pass — that's 56 correct answers.

This page gives you two ways to practice:

Free practice exam — 10 questions per attempt, pulled from a limited pool. Retake it as many times as you want. It's a solid way to get a feel for the question style and the format before you commit to anything.

Full practice exam — 80 questions, 240-minute timer, just like the real thing. Questions are drawn from a pool of 450+ questions, so every attempt pulls a different set. You won't see the same exam twice. Every question is built around the official exam topics defined by the licensing authority.

Topics Covered

The exam covers 10 topic areas. Here's what you're actually being tested on:

  • Definitions, Calculations, Theory, and Plans (8 questions) — Electrical theory, load calculations, blueprint reading, and the foundational concepts behind the code.
  • Electrical Services, Service Equipment, and Separately Derived Systems (16 questions) — The biggest section. Service entrance equipment, metering, grounding, bonding, and separately derived systems like transformers.
  • Electrical Feeders (7 questions) — Feeder sizing, conductor ampacity, and overcurrent protection between the service and the branch circuits.
  • Branch Circuit Calculations and Conductors (14 questions) — Sizing branch circuits, calculating loads, conductor selection, and overcurrent device ratings.
  • Electrical Wiring Methods and Electrical Materials (10 questions) — Cable types, conduit systems, boxes, fittings, and installation requirements.
  • Electrical Equipment and Devices (12 questions) — Receptacles, switches, luminaires, panels, and the equipment rules that apply to residential work.
  • Motors and Generators (2 questions) — Basic motor circuit requirements and disconnecting means.
  • Electrical Control Devices and Disconnecting Means (2 questions) — Control circuit devices, disconnects, and switching arrangements.
  • Special Occupancies, Equipment, and Conditions (7 questions) — Garages, pools, spas, bathrooms, and other locations with additional code requirements.
  • Renewable Energy Technologies (2 questions) — Solar PV systems and the code rules that apply to residential renewable energy installations.

How This Practice Exam Helps

Knowing the material and performing under exam conditions are two different things. The full practice exam puts you in timed mode — 240 minutes, 80 questions — so you know exactly how your pace holds up before it counts.

After each attempt, you get a score breakdown by topic. That tells you where you're solid and where you need more work. Don't guess at your weak spots — the results show you.

Because the full exam pulls from 450+ questions and never repeats the same set, each attempt is a genuine practice run, not a memorization drill.
