About This Book

Arkansas Real Estate License Law (Arkansas Code Title 17, Chapter 42) governs the real estate industry in Arkansas under the oversight of the Arkansas Real Estate Commission (AREC). The statute sets forth licensing requirements, standards of conduct, and supervision guidelines for salespersons, executive brokers, and principal brokers throughout the state.

Core Licensing Requirements

Anyone seeking to legally practice real estate in Arkansas must meet the following initial requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Education: Must successfully complete 60 classroom hours of pre-license education, at least 30 of which must cover basic real estate principles.
  • Background Check: Must submit to both state and federal (FBI) criminal background checks.
  • Examination: Must pass the licensure examination.
  • Affiliation: Must affiliate with a licensed principal broker in order to activate the license.

License Types

Arkansas law recognizes three distinct tiers of real estate credentials:

  • Salesperson: An entry-level licensee who must work under the direct supervision of a principal broker.
  • Executive Broker: A broker who has satisfied additional experience and education requirements, enabling them to supervise other licensees on behalf of the principal broker.
  • Principal Broker: The individual who bears ultimate responsibility for the real estate activities of all licensees within their firm, including the management of trust accounts.
